Review by James Berardinelli Irwin Allen would be proud. Poseidon is a throwback - a 1970s-style disaster film made with 2006-era special effects. The movie delivers in most of the ways that matter for a motion picture of this ilk, with Poseidon never trying to be something it isn't. It's about a group of two-dimensional humans battling bad luck and Mother Nature in a sea-based disaster that makes Titanic look like a pleasure cruise. There's enough uncertainty about who's going to live and who's going to die to maintain a bit of suspense until the end, although it's more a question of mild curiosity than having a vested interest. more.. Review by Michael Atkinson Our anemic movie industry recycles so relentlessly that even complaints about micro-remilling and plasticized repackaging are themselves recycled product, offered to draw the line between concerned aging cinephiles and the target consumers who don't care a whit. But still, we've become a culture not merely tantalized by but doped on never ending resurrections of our own recent junk. The market dynamic seems to be accelerating, and perhaps there'll be a cyclical point when the diminishing returns will vanish altogether, and the punk-like essence of movies—people, stories, experience, visual insight—may rise up. Or not. more.. Review by Harveycritic “There is nothing fair about who lives and who dies,” philosophizes one members of the principal cast. That’s a statement subject to dispute. We may not know in advance which people will die, but we can be fairly certain that most of the principal cast will survive, with one sacrificed for heroism and for a stab at credibility. more..
